It is feared that the population in Chechnya has fallen to about 700,000. Several hundred thousand Chechens have fled to neighboring parts of Russia, or across the border into Georgia. There are about 80,000 Russian troops in Chechnya, about the same number in neighboring parts of Russia, and a few thousand armed Chechens fighting the Russians.
