Nigeria is worried about getting stuck with most of the peacekeeping costs for the operations now unfolding in Liberia. ECOWAS estimates that six months of peacekeeping will cost $104 million. Nigeria is contributing 1,500 troops to the peacekeeping effort. The US has put up $10, but Nigeria wants non-African nations to pay half the cost. So far, only the United States has kicked in. Western nations are reluctant to get involved in African peacekeeping because of the chaotic nature of the situations, the inability to get the locals to make and keep peace deals, and the rampant corruption.
