January 6, 2006: The political parties, which draw most of their strength from the urban population, are unable to influence the king, who still retains much support in the countryside. The Maoist rebels, a tiny fraction (perhaps 10,000 people) among the 25 million population, continue to terrorize the rural areas where they operate. Right now, it's stalemate and economic decline in a country already too poor.

January 5, 2006: Maoists made three attacks, killing three and wounding nine people.

January 2, 2006: Maoists ended their four month cease-fire, and began a new terror campaign using bombs and ambushes.
