The Maoist truce is largely a sham. The rebels continue to
kidnap, extort and intimidate. They apparently consider "truce" to mean no mass
attacks on government bases. The army and police are not observing the truce,
and continue to pursue rebel units in rural areas.
September 14, 2005:
Anti-king demonstrations were broken up by police, leading to some 300 arrests,
including 80 journalists.
September 11, 2005: The Maoists are trying to
gain some legitimacy by appealing to the UN for help in forcing the government
to comply with the Maoist truce.
September 10, 2005: In western Nepal,
Maoists kidnapped a hundred high school students, as part of their recruiting
program.
