In Aceh, eight rebels surrendered, continuing a trend over the last few weeks. More of the rebels hiding out in forest camps are getting tired of being hunted, and often found, by troops and police patrols or aircraft. But the surrenders represent only a small number of the thousands of rebels still thought to be active. The patrols are also searching for the hundred or so people the rebels have kidnapped and are holding in secret locations. Most of the captives are thought to be local people suspected of being police informers. The rebels have used terror in some areas to gain cooperation from the population. The rebels demand that locals do not talk to the police about rebel activities, and also provide food and money to sustain the several thousand rebels living out in the bush.
