One of the odder results of the Afghan war was the warmer relations between Pakistan and Iran. Pakistan's support of the Taliban for the last five years made Iran angry. The reason was that the fanatic Taliban persecuted Shiite Afghans (who lived in western Afghanistan, near Shiite Iran.) Normally, relations between the two flavors of Islam were OK. But the Taliban became an enemy of Shiites, and thus an enemy of Iran. In Kashmir, a rebel ambush left 13 soldiers dead and at least two dozen wounded. In other incidents, two soldiers, several civilians and 18 rebels died.
