Peacekeepers and newly formed police continue to confront pro and anti-Aristide militias. The anti-Aristide group is more heavily armed and represents members of the disbanded army. And then there are numerous criminal gangs, and all these armed groups skirmish as they try to maintain control of towns and neighborhoods. Since the violence flared last September, over 250 have died. Efforts to disarm the militias have so far failed, although UN peacekeepers remain determined to do it. Somehow. Eventually.
