Evidence collected in Afghanistan indicates that the Taliban supported IMU (Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan) was largely destroyed in the northern Afghanistan fighting during late 2001. Since the late 1990s, the IMU has used bases in Afghanistan to launch raids into Central Asia. Remnants of the IMU will try and rebuild, probably in Central Asia. The Central Asian nations have an increasing number of citizens unhappy at the corruption and totalitarian rule. This is the groups IMU recruits from.
