In 2001, 43 percent of U.S. military equipment shipped overseas, was carried by commercial ships or aircraft. The equipment shipped included Apache gunships, Blackhawk helicopters, missiles, small arms and various electronic items. Some of the ships have foreign crews. Questions have been raised about the possibility of spies or saboteurs getting close to this equipment. So far, there have been no incidents, but the war on terrorism has raised fears that this is a situation that could be exploited by hostile organizations. One possible solution is to send a small security detachment with each ship carrying such material.
