Recognizing that reserve and National Guard troops are getting mobilized more than in the past, the Department of Defense is providing additional benefits to encourage the reservists to stay in service. The new benefits include access to the military health plan (Tricare) for mobilized reservists and their families, as well as higher educational benefits (via the GI Bill). Reservists can get 40-80 percent of the educational payments, depending on how long they are mobilized. The additional benefits are expected to increase the reenlistment rates of reservists.
