The Royal Australian Air Force has begun upgrading its F-18A Hornets with the Phase-2.1 program, which covers the installation of the new APG-73 radar. This radar allows use of the ASRAAM and AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, and will be completed in mid-2003. The next phase of upgrades, Phase-2.2, to be finished in 2006, will include Link-16 data transfer systems, full-color displays, moving map systems, improved chaff and flare systems, and a helmet-mounted weapon sight. Phase-2.3 will include new self-protection jammers. Phase-3 will be a structural upgrade to keep the planes flying into 2015.--Stephen V Cole
