Following in the footsteps of a number other failed insurgent groups, the ultra-radical Peruvian Sendero Luminoso movement has recently begun dabbling in the drug business. Several times recently, Sendero Luminoso forces have attacked Peruvian and international anti-drug personnel. The objective of this move seems to be two-fold, first to continue to prosecute the "armed struggle" against the Peruvian government and, secondly, to develop ties with local narcotics cartels, in return for financial support.
