Terrorism: April 21, 2005

Islamic radicalism is showing up in some out of the way places, like the Caribbean. There are small Moslem minorities in a number of English-speaking Caribbean countries, such as Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana. Security forces in these countries have been keeping some more outspoken mosques and imams under surveillance. There has been an increase in the circulation of extremist literature and audio tapes, some of this advocate attacks on the "infidel," and the security forces believe radical Islamists among them may be stockpiling arms, possibly for attacks on tourists, a mainstay of the local economies. A less likely threat, though still credible given the small size of some of the Caribbean republics, might be a attempted coup and the establishment of tiny Islamic republics in paradise.
