Terrorism: May 25, 2003

Kenya reports a new counter-terror sweep in the Mombasa area in the last week. Kenyan police in Mombasas Coast Province Criminal Investigation Division arrested four men suspected of links to international terror groups. In November 2003 suicide bombers hit an Israeli-owned hotel in Mombasa. The big terror strike in Kenya was the August 1998 destruction of the US embassy in Nairobi. Recent reports from Kenya say the Kenyan government is responding to international political pressure, such as warnings to travelers issued by European governments, Canada, and the US that have led to economic losses in the tourism industry. Kenya has also tried to improve control of its border with Somalia, which in the past has been a route for terrorist infiltrators.
