Terrorism: April 27, 2003

Archives

Turkish press sources reported that Al Qaeda operatives intended to strike near Gallipoli and other sites in Turkey. Gallipoli does make sense --Australian government officials are in Turkey to attend ceremonies commemorating the World War One battle and Australia is a counter-terror coalition partner. The terror warnings stated that the Al Qaeda-sponsored suicide bomb attacks could come near the end of April (and presumably the first week of May). An Australian newspaper added to the reports, citing a Turkish source that said 35 specially-trained terrorists had entered Turkey from northern Iraq. The targets mentioned were airfields and logistics depots (the logistics points included supply dumps for humanitarian aid). As terror warnings go this one has a lot of specifics. That also means Turkish security is on alert.
