A Russian Defense Ministry crisis quick response center source told the Interfax-Military News Agency that fourteen USAF planes used Ukrainian air space on 30 June, enroute to Afghanistan. A total of 2,269 American and German military flights (1,265 military transports and 1,004 aerial tankers) crossed Ukrainian air space from 9 October 2001 to 1 July 2002. The planes were tracked by the country's air defense assets and the Ukraerorukh company's corresponding services, while the Kulbakino and Lviv airfields could be used in the event of an emergency. - Adam Geibel
