The current leader of the Shining Path group was captured by the Peruvian army, while pursuing a group of some sixty rebels. Although the Peruvian Shining Path rebels have been much reduced in size over the last ten years, there are still several hundred of them operating in the eastern jungles. The reverses the Shining Path has suffered in the last few years has pretty much eliminated their operations in urban areas, as well as their terrorism campaign. But Shining Path will probably survive even the capture of its current leader. Eventually, a forceful and charismatic leader
