The growing drug trade in Europe is causing concern that this will provide terrorists with additional support. Many of the drugs are coming from Afghanistan, which provides bases and support for terrorist organizations. The drug smugglers are generally apolitical, but they also provide a criminal underground that will provide weapons and other assistance to anyone who can pay for it. During the Cold War the KGB frequently used criminal gangs to assist in their espionage operations, and support for anti-Western terrorists. It appears that Islamic fundamentalists are picking up
