Uganda: August 31, 2002

Archives

: On 31 August, the Ugandan Army completed its final troop pullout from the Democratic Republic of Congo in the previous week but left behind one 1,000-man battalion at the request of the United Nations. The UN Mission in DR-Congo (MONUC) reported that 1,164 Ugandan soldiers had left Beni (North Kivu) and 632 from Gbadolite (Equator province) by 30 August. The Ugandans remained in Bunia however, allegedly to guarantee the security of the city and population: tribal clashes in Bunia earlier in August involving tribal militias, Ugandan troops and a formerly-Ugandan backed rebel faction left more than 110 dead (many were women and children hacked to death with machetes). Uganda had withdrawn a total of 8,000 troops, mostly last year under a peace deal. - Adam Geibel
