Uganda: August 30, 2002

Religious groups have played a key role in producing a ceasefire agreement between the Ugandan government and the LRA, but some religious leaders have been caught in the crossfire. Three Roman Catholic priests were arrested by Ugandan Army troops on August 28. The priests were talking to an LRA group when a Ugandan army patrol ambushed the group. One of the priests was hit by an RPG fragment in the incident. A Catholic bishop later said the incident was a misunderstanding and that the priests had been talking to the LRA force for less than 20 minutes. The circumstances surrounding this event remain unclear, though the priests claim they were treated brutally by the Ugandan Army. Though a ceasefire is in order, the Ugandan Army is demanding that the LRA move into specific areas as part of the ceasefire agreement.
