This is hideous, but this is the LRA. AFP reported that LRA rebels attacked a funeral in south Sudan and killed up to 60 mourners. The attack took place in the Agoro Mountain area (Sudan-Uganda border region). A subsequent report said the LRA band forced some of the mourners to eat (yes, as in cannibalism) parts of the deceased (ie, the man who was being buried) before the LRA rebels began shooting the mourners. The AFP report said the story was unconfirmed. It is, however, in line with past LRA atrocities, many of which have been documented by journalists and NGOs. Several sources have told StrategyPage that theres an even more hideous side to the LRA. Many of its soldiers are teenagers. These children were kidnapped by the LRA and raised to be troops. These children know nothing but banditry and warfare, hence Jim Dunnigans line It's Lord of the Flies with automatic weapons. To be fair about it, the Ugandan Army also recruits teenagers to serve in (home) village defense units. Of course, its just a step from defending the home to defending a roadblock, to going out on patrol. (Austin Bay)
