January 10, 2006:
Most of the violence is in the form of drive by attacks (on motorcycles) using pistols or assault rifles. In the last year, there have been 40-50 of these a week in the south. The Islamic terrorists live at home, or in towns among Moslem populations that either willingly, or because they are terrorized, protect the identity of the terrorists. This is why the government believes there are links between the terrorists and criminal gangs, because the gangsters use the same terror tactics to protect themselves. The government has been trying to recruit informers, or get locals to provide information. This has led to some arrests, but has also revealed that the criminal gangs are very well entrenched, and the Islamic terrorists appear to have links with the gangs.
January 7, 2006: In the south, two attacks left five people dead.
January 4, 2006: In the last year 1,076 people have died and been 1,600 wounded because of the Islamic terrorism in the south.
