In Moslem southern Thailand, increased security for the national elections,  announcement of major economic projects and prompt rescue and relief efforts after the December 26 tidal waves, has dampened enthusiasm for Islamic terrorism. The Islamic radicals are still there. But unless most of the population is willing to stonewall the police, the Islamic militants must avoid attacks. The risk of getting caught is too great. There is still violence down south, but not as much as last year.
