International pressure on Sudan to rein in the Sudanese Arab militia, is not having much effect. The Sudanese government apparently does not exactly control the militia, but simply armed them with AK-47s rifles and lots of ammunition and let it be known that the army and police would not interfere if the Arabs attacked black African tribes that occupied land the Arab tribes had long coveted. The government would anger the Arab tribes, who are their chief allies against black African rebels in Darfur, if they tried to crack down on the violence.
