Is the ceasefire going to hold in Darfur? What ceasefire? On September 3 a Sudan government delegation went to Chad to sign a secretly negotiated ceasefire with the Darfur rebels. The ceasefire would be in effect for six weeks. On September 4 the two parties signed the deal. However, the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM the Darfur resistance organization) issued a statement on September 5 that said the Sudan government was still launching air attacks. There was also a reported exchange of gunfire between a pro-Sudan militia and the Darfur rebels. However, no casualties were mentioned. Meanwhile, on September 3, the UN said that it believe up to 65,000 refugees have fled Darfur and entered Chad. The refugee wave began in April, when fighting picked up in the Darfur region.
