US President George W Bush named former US Senator John Danforth (R-Missouri) as a special envoy to Sudan. Danforths appointment is part of a new Bush Administration push to look for a political settlement to Sudans civil war. Washington will offer to serve as a mediator between Khartoums Islamist government and the Christian and animist groups forming the SPLA.
