October 3, 2006:
The fighting has gone pretty low key. In the last ten weeks, about a thousand have died in the renewed violence. In the last 23 years, the war with the LTTE has left over 65,000 dead, although there had been a ceasefire since 2002. This time around, the fighting has been more low-key. But some 200,000 civilians have fled the gunfire and shelling. For the moment, that's what the resumed war is mostly all about. Lots of patrolling, skirmishes and ambushes, and the shelling.
October 1, 2006: Norwegian diplomats are negotiating a resumption of the peace talks. The LTTE is still split by factional fighting and disagreements over accepting federalism, or fighting on for separatism. There are also disputes over control of relief aid (especially for all the post-tsunami rebuilding) and sea access (the LTTE wants to be able to import weapons).
September 30, 2006: In several clashes, mainly in the east, at least twenty (17 of them LTTE) were killed.
