August 3, 2006: Nearly a thousand people have been killed so far this year, in fighting with the LTTE. About twenty percent of those deaths have occurred in the past week. About 60 percent of the dead are rebels.
August 2, 2006: LTTE artillery and mortars fired into three army camps in the north, as well as a Moslem fishing village. The LTTE has been trying to drive all non-Tamils out of northern and eastern districts the LTTE believes should be part of the "Tamil Homeland."
August 1, 2006: The LTTE has declared the four year truce to be officially over, and the war resumed. LTTE artillery fired into the government held port of Trincomalee in the north, almost hitting a troopship carrying over 800 soldiers, as it was entering the harbor.
July 31, 2006: Army artillery hit LTTE positions in the north. In the last few days, over sixty people have died, including 18 soldiers killed by a roadside bomb, and more by LTTE artillery.
The LTTE has asked the truce monitors to declare the ceasefire officially over.
July 30, 2006: Troops advanced into LTTE held territory in the north, to gain control of an irrigation canal where the rebels have blocked water supplies to farmers in government controlled territory. Air force bombers have hit LTTE positions as part of the operations, leaving at least a dozen dead.
