The LTTE is becoming increasingly paranoid, and brutal. The LTTE is fighting an internal civil war, as well as the refusal of the majority Sinhalese to allow the island to be partitioned.
May 22, 2006: Violence increased, leaving ten dead and many more wounded. The fighting this time is mainly between LTTE factions in eastern Sri Lanka. LTTE rebels also attacked the offices of thee relief organizations, believing that all foreigners are against the LTTE.
May 21, 2006: A senior LTTE leader was shot dead by a sniper, and the dissident Karuna faction was believed responsible.
May 20, 2006: The European Union (EU) has agreed to outlaw the LTTE, thus cutting the organization off from a major source of cash, and equipment imports. The LTTE has threatened to resume the war if the EU does this, but since the LTTE is fighting again anyway, what difference does it make. Today's fighting left over a dozen dead or wounded, while thousands of villagers fled the violence.
May 19, 2006: In the north, LTTE fighters again attacked army positions with rifles and PRGs. The attackers were driven back. Meanwhile in the east, the two LTTE factions continued hunting and killing each other.
May 18, 2006: A light aircraft, of the size that could be operated from a road, has been seen over LTTE territory, and is believed to be an LTTE aircraft, to be used for reconnaissance or suicide attacks. The aircraft flies low and at night. The LTTE is believed to have several of these aircraft.
May 17, 2006: In the north, LTTE fighters attacked army positions with rifles and PRGs. The attackers were driven back.
