January 28, 2006:
US pressure on the LTTE (to isolate it more completely as a "terrorist organization", and aid the government), is believed to have persuaded the rebels to resume negotiations. The hard line LTTE are still willing to fight for partition of the island.
January 27, 2006: The navy intercepted an Indian trawler off the north coast, and seized 60,000 detonators for landmines. These were apparently intended for the LTTE, which likes to assemble its own mines locally.
January 26, 2006: An LTTE leader, Major Kapilan, was killed by an RPG in eastern Sri Lanka. The rebels accused the government of being responsible. There is a civil war going on in the LTTE, between moderates in eastern Sri Lanka, and hard liners in the north. The hard liners blame the army for supporting the easterners.
January 25, 2006: The government and the LTTE have agreed to resume peace talks in Switzerland next month.
January 24, 2006: In the northeast, a reporter was shot dead, the fourth to die in the last year for writing something the rebels didn't like. In the capital, five bombs went off, but there were no injuries.
January 23, 2006: In the east, three soldiers were killed in an ambush,
January 22, 2006: In the east, four soldiers were wounded when their patrol was ambushed. The LTTE is believed responsible.
January 21, 2006: In the east, a policeman was wounded and two rebels killed in several incidents.
