A grenade went off in a van in the capital, near the office of a Tamil newspaper that opposed the LTTE. Many Tamils do not support the LTTE, and this has caused the terrorist organization to more aggressively pressure these groups to halt their opposition. Three years of ceasefire and negotiation have not led to a peace deal, and violence within the Tamil community is increasing.
October 4, 2005: The navy arrested four LTTE members in in the northeastern harbor of Trincomalee. The men were charged with spying for the terrorist organization.
October 3, 2005: Factional fighting in the LTTE left three people dead in the north.
October 1, 2005: In eastern Sri Lanka, ethnic militants killed two Tamils and one Sinhalese. Factional fighting within the LTTE often involves attempts to drive non-Tamils out of "Tamil areas."
