mso-bidi-language: AR-SA"> Troops enforced a curfew in the center of the island where Sinhalese hardliners killed 26 Tamil inmates of a prisoner of war camp. Several hundred locals have been arrested. If the matter is not dealt with decisively, the incident could increase support for the LTTE. Most Tamils do not support the LTTE, but many native Sinhalese are increasingly angry over the continued war against the separatist LTTE rebels. Meanwhile, warplanes bombed suspected LTTE positions in the northeast. The rebels being attacked are believed to be among those who took part in a recent attack on the naval base at Trincomalee.
