Fighting broke out again in the north and east, leaving at least 25 rebels dead. In the capital, dozens were arrested as suspected supporters of the eight man LTTE suicide squad that penetrated into a high security area around parliament and nearly carried out an ambush, apparently aimed at any number of high ranking politicians to be found in the area. What shocked the government was how well organized the rebel network was in the city. The rebels not only got themselves and all their equipment into the capital, but were also able to take up an ambush position close to the parliament complex. However, in undertaking such a daring operation, the rebels have exposed many of their supporters to capture by government security forces.
