Sri Lanka: The War Moves North

Archives

February6, 2007: The air force has turned its attention to the north, and LTTE camps are now under attack. LTTE morale is low, and many Tamil civilians in the north are increasingly hostile towards the LTTE. However, the LTTE hardcore is in the north, and there is no dissident LTTE group, as there was in the east.

February 5, 2007: In Britain, the coercive LTTE fundraising tactics were revealed by the media. Many of the 150,000 Sri Lankan Tamils in Britain have complained to the police about the extortion, but until recently nothing was done because the LTTE had managed to keep their image clean. But now everything is falling down. The LTTE has been declared a terrorist organization in most areas where there are Tamil migrant populations, and the LTTEs rough, and often underhanded, methods have become common knowledge.

February 4, 2007: After finding a 5.5 pound bomb in the capital, police arrested over 200 suspected LTTE members to forestall terrorist attacks during tomorrows Independence Day celebrations.

February 1, 2007: Aid groups are ready to resume work in the east, with the demise of the LTTE administration.

January 31, 2007: LTTE fighters in the east have reverted to guerilla warfare, and used a roadside bomb to kill six policemen. Meanwhile, an international arrest warrant has been obtained for another LTTE leader, this one the commander of the "Sea Tigers." This naval force smuggles weapons in via boat, and battles the Sri Lankan navy.
