Mozambique troops arrived in Burundi to beef up the African Union peacekeeping contingent. Mozambique described the deployment as a "first contingent" consisting of 20 troops. Another 200 will be sent and probably deploy within the next month. The Ethiopian contingent is said to now be up to 840 soldiers. That figure could increase. South Africa has 1600 troops committed to the AU peacekeeping force and is effectively serving as the "lead nation" in the operation . One of the goals of the peacekeeping force is to provide security for humanitarian aid. One report said the some of the peacekeepers are in fact delivering aid themselves.
