The African Union (AU) reiterated its concern over the failure to deploy an "effective functioning" African Mission in Burundi (AMIB), then made fresh appeals for a peacekeeping force there. South Africa, Ethiopia and Mozambique had agreed to contribute troops, but only South Africa had so far sent combat troops (Ethiopia had sent an advance party of officers). Lack of sufficient finances and logistical problems were cited.
Burundi's government is lifting its ban on two independent radio stations pulled off the air for violating a law against airing the comments of rebel officials. The government had accused both of inciting ethnic divisions. - Adam Geibel
