Western press sources and NGO sources report 42 people were killed in various incidents in Burundi. The most grievous incident occurred April 6, when a Burundian Army unit (according to the NGO source) surrounded a house (possibly a housing complex) "suspected" of harboring rebels, and destroyed it. The incident occurred in the village of Gihanga. 38 people were reportedly killed in the incident (29 civilians, two Burundian Army troops, and seven FNL rebels). A western press source said that the Burundian Army unit received weapons fire from the house.
