We dont think much will come of this but well report it any way since weve been following on a regular basis the political attempts to bring the FNL and FDD into the negotiating process in Burundi. On November 11, Burundi's mainline Hutu party, the Front for Democracy in Burundi (FRODEBU), announced that it was going to send a new negotiating team to the Hutu rebels in the FNL and FDD and try to negotiate a ceasefire between the rebels and the Burundian Army. FRODEBU is now a major player in the transitional government that took power November 1. A subsequent report said that the FDD did send a negotiating team to the town of Kigoma to meet the FORDEBU representatives. Dont look for instant success, but this kind of Hutu peace parlay is a positive political payoff from the powersharing agreement (which Nelson Mandela was instrumental in arranging).
