On April 7, guerrillas from the Hutu National Liberation Forces (FNL) guerrilla group knocked out an electrical power line supplying part of the capital, Bujumbura. On April 9, both Burundian government sources and western journalists reported another Hutu Forces for Defense of Democracy (FDD) attack near Gitega, Burundis second largest city. The FDD used mortars to hit the citys outlying districts. The FDD also hit what was described as an agricultural college and a military post in the Gitega suburb of Zege. On April 10, FDD rebels once again struck near Gitega, but were beaten back by Burundian government troops. A government report said a total of 65 people dead in two days of fighting.
