In Chechnya, rebel violence left 11 policemen dead.

In areas adjacent to Chechnya in the Caucasus, local police continue to seek out and kill or imprison any remaining adherents of Wahhabism (a fundamentalist form of Islam that originated in Saudi Arabia.) Seeing Wahhabism as the first step to an Islamic revolution, the provincial governments have adopted a hard line against the sect members. There are thought to be some 5,000 Wahhabites in the Caucasus, although few are armed. Most try and keep their beliefs to themselves.
