The Interior Ministry says it has lost 62 dead and 253 wounded in Chechnya so far this year. In the 21 months of fighting, the policemen of the Interior Ministry have lost 815 dead and 2,497 dead. Total dead has been 3096 (including some 400 local Chechens fighting for Russia.) The Interior Ministry provides police functions while the army goes after rebel units in cities and in the bush. In Chechnya today, two civilians, three rebels and three soldiers died in various incidents.
