The government announced that 2,728 troops had been killed in Chechnya in the last sixteen months. Another 7,971 were wounded, although 3,720 returned to duty after treatment. According to these figures, only 300 Russians have been killed in the last year. Anti-war groups in Russia have claimed that the death toll is twice as high, but no conclusive evidence has been offered.
