In southeaster Chechnya, warplanes struck rebel positions after ten rebel groups (500 men in all) made eleven attacks on Russian positions in the area. In Murmansk, the secrecy and duplicity the navy displayed when the submarine Kursk went down reminds everyone that the Soviet style attitudes still remain in many parts of Russian society. Many of the more adept and adaptable officers have gotten out of the navy in the last ten years. What remain are a lot of inept people who live in the past.
