Half a dozen villages and towns in southern Chechnya are still controlled by rebels. Are are surrounded and under attack by Russian troops. Rebel commanders promise a new offensive when the warmer weather arrives. The rebels have demonstrated a capacity for occupying Russian controlled villages, ejecting or killing any Interior Ministry troops stationed there and forcing the Russians to retake the place.
