In the last week, Russia lost 36 army troops and nine from Ministry of Interior units in the Chechen fighting. Most of the fighting is now south of Grozny, in the hills. The next challenge for the Russian military is a guerilla war. This is not the first time the Russians have faced this challenge in the Caucasus, but in the past the Russians could get away with brutal methods to coerce the Chechens into submission. Times have changed, and such behavior is less likely to ignored. This is especially true for a major nation like Russia. While the Chechens are even more brutal than the Russians, they are the underdog in this war and, worst of all, have no one in charge that the UN and human rights groups can complain to.
