Chechen rebels in Grozny are showing their characteristic flair for improvisation. Petroleum products (gas, diesel, etc) and any other chemicals available are turned into remote control bombs, to be detonated when the advancing Russians are nearby. This has caused the Russians to accuse the Chechens of using chemical warfare, for some of the chemicals used are poisonous. The Chechen tactics have slowed the Russians down, but that was expected. The Russians are advancing methodically, blasting any opposition with artillery, tank fire and bombs. The Chechens can resist the Russians, but they cannot stop them. Unless the Chechens can escape the city, they will eventually make a last stand and be destroyed. Meanwhile, the Russians have a tight cordon around the city, making it very difficult for the Chechens to get in, or out.
