More demonstrations against the government, but not as violent.  Comoran troops fired on anti-government demonstrators November 27. Between 15 and 20 people were injured in the protests and scuffling with police and troops. A subsequent report said seven of the injured were wounded by gunfire. Opposition groups on Grande-Comore Island were protesting the policies of the current president, Colonel Azali Assoumani. The source of the dispute is the distribution of power between the state (which controls all three islands) and the local governments on the individual islands. This confrontation could mean the new constitution (adopted in December 2001) is unraveling. Dont rule otu a secessionist movement. The island of Anjouan tried to secede from the Comoros in 1997.
