Potential Hot Spots: June 17, 2003

Another week of vicious violence and mayhem has passed in Robert Mugabes Zimbabwe. This comes amid reports that the Zimbabwean food crisis is getting worse. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates 5.5 million people in Zimbabwe need food aid. In the last five years, food production in Zimbabwe has fallen by 50 percent. Drought is one culprit, but Mugabes drive to take over white farms is a major part of the problem. MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai (arrested again on June 6) remains in prison, despite various attempts to free him on bail. Hes charged with treason which is punishable by death in Zimbabwe. On June 12 Mugabe threatened to expel the British ambassador. Mugabe says Great Britain is interfering in Zimbabwes internal affairs. Britain is one of Mugabes favorite targets, since its the former colonial power. In fact, he says his MDC opposition is a British puppet. (Trust us the MDC is no British puppet.) On June 13 Mugabe said his government wouldnt permit any more protests from the MDC. He also attacked whites living in Zimbabwe, whom he said promote the MDC. Well, no doubt most of them do. However, Mugabes old trick of railing about colonialism and playing his race card simply doesnt play beyond his own cadre of tribal supporters. Stay tuned.
