Since last September, opposition politicians say Yemen has arrested thousands of its own citizens on suspicion of involvement with terrorist organizations. The government says it is only holding  85 people on suspicion of al Qaeda involvement. The government says that al Qaeda is no longer operating in Yemen because most of the Yemeni al Qaeda were either killed in Afghanistan or are still over there. On May 19th, 14 interior tribes declared that they did not have any terrorists in their midst and that they would resist any American attacks on them. On May 17th, 30 United States Special Forces soldiers arrived to help train Yemeni troops. A bomb went off near the prime ministers residence on May 10th, and later a group that backs al Qaeda took credit for the attack. At least 36 Yemeni soldiers have been killed in attempts to arrest terrorism suspects.
