Additional information on the Kenyan tribal battles: wire services reported that on November 18 Wardei tribe cattle herders shot and killed two Pokomo tribespeople during a small battle in the Tana River district. Seven people suffered bullet wounds. The Wardei are herders, the Pokomo are primarily farmers. In the battle the Wardei had guns, the Pokomo machetes, farm implements, and some spears. Reports say several Pokomo villages have been set afire by Wardei raiders. On November 21, subsequent reports said the battles had continued, with a total of 19 people killed. Approximately 3000 refugees fled the fighting that occurred on November 21. A Pokomo spokesman said that police reservists who are Wardei tribesman participated in the violence. The spokesman said the Wardei were using Kenyan government-issued G3 automatic rifles.
